Gestational diabetes is defined as diabetes that occurs in the pregnancy period.

What causes Gestational Diabetes Mellitus?

Gestational diabetes arises when your body can’t manufacture the additional insulin needed during pregnancy. Insulin, a hormone created in the pancreas, helps your body use glucose for energy and helps manage your blood glucose levels.

During pregnancy, your body generates unique hormones and goes through other changes, such as weight growth. Because of these changes, your body’s cells don’t use insulin properly, a condition called insulin resistance. All pregnant women have some insulin resistance throughout late pregnancy. Most pregnant women can generate enough insulin to overcome insulin resistance, but others cannot. These women acquire gestational diabetes.

Signs and  symptoms of GDM

However, symptoms may include:

  • visually impaired
  • unquenchable thirst
  • motion sickness
  • problems with the bladder, vagina, or skin due to repeated infections
  • frequent urinary incontinence
  • the formation of sugar in the urine

Glucose challenge test

Treatment

Prevention
