All body tissues receive a functioning blood supply from the systemic circulation. It transports oxygen and nutrients to cells while also collecting carbon dioxide and unwanted products. The left ventricle pumps oxygenated blood from the arteries to capillaries in the body’s tissues, which is known as systemic circulation.
Systemic Circulation
Oxygenated blood is pumped by the heart -the left ventricle -into the aorta, which is distributed to all part of the body by arteries. The arteries branch and rebranch to form arterioles and capillaries, which distribute blood to the tissues. The capillaries have only one layer of flat endothelial cells; the oxygen, carbon dioxide, nutrients, and waste products are exchanged in the capillaries.
The capillaries drain into venules; they unite to form larger veins. Venous blood from the upper part of the body is drained by a large vein, the superior vena cava; venous blood from the lower part of the body is drained by the inferior vena cava. These two veins carry the deoxygenated blood back to the right atrium of the heart. This completes the systemic circulation.
